A lifelong resident of Appalachia, Joshua is an academic administrator at a small liberal arts college and teaches courses in organizational leadership, history, and research methodology. His research has typically focused on the economic history of Appalachia, with a particular interest in poverty. He is married to Betsy, a student affairs administrator, and they have one son, JD. They live on a small farm in the mountains of western North Carolina.

As I think should happen with most folks, my political and social opinions have drifted over the years, and some of the things I wrote in this essay aren't things I'd write again if I wrote this essay today instead of years ago.
